Fluke goal gives West Ham 3-2 win over Chelsea in EPL

London, Dec. 4 (BNA): Arthur Maswako’s 87th-minute winner gave West Ham a 3-2 victory over Chelsea on Saturday and loosened the visitors’ grip on the Premier League lead, according to the Associated Press.

Chelsea advanced twice with a Thiago Silva header and a superb goal from Mason Mount, but West Ham returned both times with a penalty kick from Manuel Lanzini and Jarrod Bowen’s low shot from the edge of the area.

With less than four minutes left in the match, Maswako hit a speculative cross from the left flank that veered towards the goal and surprised Chelsea goalkeeper Edward Mendy. Mendy dove to keep the ball out but only managed to push it inside his near post.

He left Chelsea just one point ahead of Manchester City and two ahead of Liverpool ahead of their game later on Saturday.

For West Ham led by David Moyes, it was another great win after beating Liverpool 3-2 at home in the league and eliminating both Manchester clubs from the League Cup. He ensured that the Hammers remained in fourth place after this weekend.

Chelsea took the lead in the 28th minute when Mount swung over a corner kick and Silva’s header beat Lukasz Fabianski, who reached the ball but could only touch it inside his far post.

Silva then received a decisive intervention at the other end, as he was in the right place at the right time to block Vladimir Koval’s shot on the goal line after beating Mendy.

But West Ham got the equalizer when Mendy messed up a poor back pass from Jorginho and then had to drop Bowen in the area. Then Lanzini sent Mendy the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Mount regained Chelsea’s lead one minute before the end of the first half when he met Hakim Ziyech’s cross from a powerful shot to score his fifth goal of the season.

But Bowen came back again in the 55th minute with a shot that passed through the legs of one of the defenders and passed the far-sighted Mindy and entered the far corner.

Bowen came close to giving West Ham the lead, but instead it was Maswako’s cross attempt that inflicted Chelsea’s second defeat of the season.
