VAR denies Mané but not Bayern in 2-0 win over Wolfsburg

Berlin, August 14 (BNA): Sadio Mane canceled two goals through the video assistant referee, but Bayern Munich managed to win 2-0 against Wolfsburg in the German League on Sunday.

Mane thought he opened the scoring in the 19th minute and his celebrations ended again in the 75th after another lengthy review of VAR technology, according to The Associated Press.

Jamal Musila and Thomas Muller’s first-half goals were enough to keep Bayern’s winning start and frustrate former coach Niko Kovac on his return to Munich. Kovac, who led Bayern to the league and cup double in 2019, coached Wolfsburg in the off-season.

Kovac was lucky with his new team, which lost only two goals on Sunday. Benjamin Pavard hit the crossbar and disallowed Mane’s goal before making Musiala Bayern’s dominance in the 33rd minute.

The 19-year-old German striker eluded two defenders before establishing himself on serving the ball into the left post.

Muller made it 2-0 in the 43rd minute when Joshua Kimmich spent a poor Quin Castells effort at Wolfsburg. Alphonso Davies did a good job racing on the left before pulling it back for Kimmich.

Castells brilliantly parried Leroy Sane’s attempt early in the second half, before Bayern ruled out two more goals – including Mane – for offside.

Bayern, the 10-times champion, started the season with a 6-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt last weekend.

Earlier Sunday, Mainz and Union Berlin eliminated each other with a 0-0 draw in Mainz. Both teams remained undefeated after winning their opening matches.
