Canada wins ATP Cup with win over Spain

Sydney, Jan. 9 (BNA): Felix Auger-Aliassime clinched the ATP Cup for Canada on Sunday with a 7-6 (3) 6-3 singles victory over Roberto Bautista Agut to give his country an unbeatable 2-0 lead. against Spain.

Denis Shapovalov opened the match for Canada with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Pablo Carreno Busta, the Associated Press reported.

Auger-Aliassim and Shapovalov won the crucial doubles match against Russia on Saturday in the semi-finals to eliminate the defending champions. With the title on the line, they did their best in tennis to defeat two-time finalist Spain.

“The emotions are incredible,” Auger-Aliassime said on the ATP’s website. “There is no better feeling than winning. We left it all there. We came back from afar in this competition, losing our first four matches. But we never stopped believing.”

Shapovalov had lost four of his previous five matches against Karino Busta.
