Female soccer players in Italy allowed to turn professional

Rome, April 26 (BUS): Italian female footballers will finally be able to turn professional next season after years of amateur-only status limiting their salaries.

The Italian Football Association’s executive board on Tuesday approved new regulations that open the way for a women’s professional era from July 1 – just in time for the upcoming Serie A season.

Italian law has a limited number of females player to amateur status, which means they can earn no more than 30,000 euros ($32,000) a year before taxes.

In the initial vote, the Women’s Union unexpectedly voted against the change, according to the Associated Press.

Carolina Moras, the former Italy chief and Azzurri coach, praised the move.
