Crowds, dignitaries gather for King Charles III’s coronation

Tens of thousands of spectators, thousands of troops, hundreds of guests and a few protesters gathered Saturday around London’s Westminster Abbey, where King Charles III, the man who waited seven decades to become king, will be crowned with everyone else. The Associated Press (AP) reports that Britain can congregate in pomp and miss.

There will be crowns and diamonds, loud music, purple robes and gorgeous hats – and a stirring chant of “God Save the King” inside the abbey and in the streets outside.

The church was buzzing with excitement and was resplendent with fragrant flowers and colorful hats as guests began arriving two hours before the ceremony. Celebrities such as Judi Dench, Emma Thompson and Lionel Richie flocked to the abbey, along with politicians and judges in wigs, soldiers with shiny medals attached to their red tunics, and members of the House of Lords in their red robes.
