Cholera outbreak claims ten more lives in South Africa

Johannesburg, May 22 (BNA): South Africa’s Gauteng Provincial Health Department announced on Sunday 19 new cases of cholera in Hamanskral, including 10 deaths.

South Africa reported its first death from cholera in February, after the virus arrived in the country from Malawi, Reuters reports.

It was not clear how many cholera cases were nationwide until Sunday, but the most populous province of Gauteng, where Johannesburg and Pretoria are located, was hardest hit.

Cholera can cause severe diarrhea, vomiting, and weakness and is spread mainly through contaminated food or water. It can kill within hours if not treated.
