Chelsea sign defender Fofana from Leicester

London, Aug. 31 (BNA) Chelsea completed the transfer of defender Wesley Fofana from Leicester City Football Club on Wednesday, with the French player signing a seven-year contract with the west London club.

Financial details were not disclosed, but British media reports said the deal was worth 70 million pounds ($81.33 million), Reuters reported.

“Wesley is a very promising defender who has already proven his quality in the Premier League at a young age,” said Chelsea president Todd Boehle.

“We are delighted that we have been able to bring one of Europe’s most exciting talents to Chelsea and strengthen our squad territory, both for this season and much in the future.”

The 21-year-old had moved to the Premier League in October 2020, joining from Ligue 1 club Saint-Etienne for a fee of £36.5m.

During his two seasons at Leicester, he made 52 appearances in all competitions, including 37 league appearances and 11 appearances in two European seasons.

On his debut in the 2020-21 season, he was named the club’s Young Player of the Year after helping Leicester win their first FA Cup, and did well in the final against Chelsea.

“The past two days have been really great days for me and I’m very happy,” Fofana told the club’s website.

“I trained this morning with the team and this is a dream for me. I am very excited to start playing for the fans and the club.

“I’m here to win titles – the Champions League, the Premier League, the FA Cup, the League Cup, everything… The club is built to win trophies, so I’m here to keep it going.”
