Arsenal, Chelsea and Sunderland reach League Cup quarter finals

London, October 27 (BNA) Arsenal and Chelsea qualified for the League Cup quarter-finals by defeating Premier League colleagues Leeds United and Southampton on Wednesday, while Sunderland qualified from the third tier as well.

Arsenal starred with second-half goals from Calum Chambers and Eddie Nkeitia in a 2-0 win over struggling Leeds, Reuters reported.

Chambers opened the scoring in the 55th minute, 23 seconds after coming on as a substitute. The defender’s header appeared to be saved by Ilan Mesler but goal-line technology ruled that the ball crossed the line.

The Gunners’ second goal came in the 69th minute from a poor header by Liam Cooper that left Maisler stranded as Nketia spins the goalkeeper and his errant shot from a tight angle just rolled into the corner.

Chelsea needed a penalty shootout to overtake Saints at Stamford Bridge after the match ended 1-1 after 90 minutes.

Thomas Tuchel’s side took the lead with a Kai Havertz header just before the end of the first half.

But Che Adams leveled the Saints within three minutes of the second half after Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga failed to catch Kyle Walker Peters’ ball and the Scottish forward turned from close range.

Arrizabalaga made amends late in the game with two superb saves for Southampton Some late pressing but the penalty shootout belongs to the hosts.

Rhys James scored the crucial penalty as Chelsea ran out 4-3 penalty shootout winners after Theo Walcott and Will Smallbone failed to score the Saints.

League One Sunderland also enjoyed a penalty shootout victory, defeating the Championship (Second Division) Queens Park Rangers in London.
