Freiburg beats Wolfsburg to boost chances of qualifying for Champions League

Freiburg May 20 (BNA): With a stroke of luck and a goal from a retired fan, Freiburg beat Wolfsburg 2-0 in the Bundesliga on Friday to stay in contention for Champions League qualification for the first time.

Striker Nils Petersen played his last home game before retiring at the end of the season, coming off the bench to score in the 75th minute to take away Wolfsburg – his first goal of the season – after Christian Gunter gave Freiburg the lead. The Associated Press (AP) reported a lucky shot that deflected over the goalkeeper.

Freiburg remained in fifth place, outside the four places in the Champions League, despite the victory, but it guaranteed the team from the Black Forest in southwestern Germany a chance to qualify for the major European championship on the last day of the German League next week.

Freiburg was one point away from third-placed Leipzig, who could guarantee a place in the Champions League if they stun leaders Bayern Munich on Saturday and level on points with Union Berlin, who play Hoffenheim on Saturday.
