Bayern celebrates Bundesliga title but left wishing for more

Berlin, May 16 (BNA): Bayern Munich’s celebration of the league title was marred by a feeling of poor achievement this year. It was the only trophy this season, according to the Associated Press.

Speculation about Robert Lewandowski’s future is adding to the unease at the club, and Bayern fans called for the Polish striker to stay during celebrations at Munich’s city hall in Marienplatz on Sunday.

The novelty of winning the German championship is starting to wear out after winning 10 consecutive Bundesliga titles.

Bayern’s high standards mean that players and club officials are focusing more on the trophies that have slipped.

Lewandowski, who finished the Bundesliga’s top scorer in the last five seasons in a row, is pushing for a move to Barcelona. But Bayern CEO Oliver Kahn says the player will honor his contract.

If any team makes a big offer for the 33-year-old, Bayern will have to reconsider.

Liverpool striker Sadio Mane and Stuttgart striker Sasa Calajdic have been touted as a potential replacement.

Kimmich said he had “mixed feelings” as his colleagues celebrated on the balcony of City Hall. He said it was better to celebrate immediately after Bayern won the league by beating Borussia Dortmund on April 23, and also lamented that it was just one title.

Bayern surprised a late goal scored by Villarreal in the Champions League quarter-final, while it was eliminated in the second round of the German Cup, losing 5-0 at the Borussia Moenchengladbach stadium.

But Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann was visibly happy to celebrate with fans from the balcony for the first time.
