Bahrain’s role in promoting gender equity highlighted

Manama, Mar. 11 (BNA): First Deputy Speaker of the Shura Council, Jamal Mohammed Fakhro, stressed Bahrain’s steps to promote gender equality through constitutional and legislative texts.

He described the campaign as the cornerstone of the approach of His Majesty King Hamad bin Al Khalifa, who enabled Bahraini women to move from the stage of empowerment to the stage of progress.

And he delivered a speech today, on behalf of Parliament Speaker Ahmed bin Salman Al-Musallam, at the opening of the Women Parliamentarians Forum, today, Saturday.

The forum was inaugurated by the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Duarte Pacheco, in the presence of the participating parliamentary delegations attending the 146th session of the Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

Fakhro welcomed the participants to this forum, which focuses on major issues related to gender equality and the leadership role of women in societies, noting that gender equality is an essential pillar for sustainable development, peace and democracy.

He referred to Bahrain’s ranking in international indicators to measure women’s progress, appreciating Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of His Majesty the King and President of the Supreme Council for Women.

National efforts to ensure that women’s needs are integrated when preparing and implementing the general budget, preparing a national index to measure the gender gap, and a national “digital” observatory for indicators of gender balance.

Fakhroo expressed his pride in the vital participation of Bahraini women in the development process, their distinguished contributions, active presence, and leadership positions.

He pointed to the presence of Bahraini women in political life, as they constitute 20% of the total members of the House of Representatives, and 25% in the Shura Council.
