At least 10 children killed in northwest Pakistan as boat capsizes in dam

Peshawar, Jan. 29 (BNA): At least 10 children were killed on Sunday when a boat carrying madrassa students capsized in Tanda Dam in northwest Pakistan, officials said, as rescue efforts continue.

Six others were injured and taken to hospital, according to Furqan Khan, deputy commissioner of Kohat district in northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province where the accident occurred.

Khan said the victims were young students at a nearby religious school. Officials said more students were missing, and did not provide details on how many, Reuters reported.

The district commissioner said the dead students ranged in age from seven to 12.

Khan said there were incidents in the past and the police closed the dam for recreational trips.

Video footage broadcast on local radio stations and on social media showed rescue workers in the water.

The accident came on the same day as a bus accident in southern Pakistan that killed more than 40 people.
