Agriculture Minister, UN-Habitat Head discuss afforestation plans

Manama, Feb. 1 (BNA): Minister of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture, Wael bin Nasser Al-Mubarak, met with Fernanda Leonardi, Head of the UN-Habitat Country Program in Bahrain.

The meeting discussed the work of joint initiatives, the United Nations Program and the United Nations Human Settlements Development Program.

The minister stressed the importance of the private sector in implementing the national strategy for afforestation.

He highlighted the specific goals to double the number of trees in the Kingdom by 2035, based on the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister.

Al-Mubarak affirmed that the programs offered by the Ministry to enhance community partnership have achieved positive results during the last period.

The programs aim to motivate the private and civil sectors to interact practically within the afforestation strategy, and to emphasize the level of community partnership to achieve the goals of COP 26 and double the number of trees in Bahrain by 2035.

Lonardoni praised the Kingdom’s achievements during the past year, which exceeded the specified percentages in the afforestation process.

She emphasized the program’s keenness to increase cooperation and achieve the goals of sustainable development and human well-being.
