Worst tornadoes for years cause ‘mass casualties’ in US

Washington, Dec. 11 (BUS): A powerful storm moved across the United States, affecting many states and causing deaths and damage from multiple hurricanes.

Early Saturday, Andy Beshear, the governor of Kentucky, called “the most violent event in Kentucky history” and was palpable of emotion as he spoke of the deaths in several counties.

The governor said the collapse of the roof of a candle factory led to “mass casualties”.

“We believe the death toll from this event will exceed 50 Kentuckians, and may end up with approximately 70-100 deaths.”

“The main cyclone was on the ground continuously for more than 200 miles [320 kilometres] In our case something we haven’t seen before.”

He said that more than 50,000 homes were without electricity. Declare a state of emergency for the state.

A tornado caused the roof of a distribution center owned in part by online retailer Amazon in the US state of Illinois to collapse.

Local Police Chief Mike Philbeck told reporters that an unknown number of people were trapped in the building at the time of the storm Friday evening in Edwardsville, near St. Louis.

Rescue workers managed to get a number of trapped people out of the building. However, it was not clear how many people were still trapped inside.

And a storm, Friday, caused up to 19 tornadoes in several US states, including Arkansas, where there was initially talk of two deaths.

It was difficult at first to get an overview of the damage and potential victims, because the information was changing rapidly.
