World Cup winner Fàbregas joins Italian 2nd-tier Como

Rome, Aug. 1 (BUS): Former world and European champion Cesc Fabregas has joined Italian second-division club Como.

Fabregas, who won the World Cup with Spain in 2010 as well as two European Championships, was revealed as a Como player on Monday after signing a two-year contract.

The small club, situated on the shores of picturesque Lake Como, finished 13th in its first season in the last season of Serie B, and last played in Serie A nearly 20 years ago.

The 35-year-old midfielder arrives on a free transfer after his contract with Monaco expires in June. He also played for Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea and won a large number of titles in an impressive career.

Fabregas said his unexpected move came because of Como CEO – and former Chelsea player – Dennis Wise.

Fabregas will not be the only Serie B World Cup winner, with former Italy player Gianluigi Buffon still playing against Parma at the age of 44.

Como, which has been declared bankrupt twice in the past 18 years and re-established, has been owned by UK-based media and entertainment company SENT Entertainment Ltd since 2019.
