Works Minister participates in Global Forum for Food and Agriculture

Manama, Jan. 28 (BNA) The Kingdom of Bahrain, represented by Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning, Issam bin Abdullah Khalaf, participated in the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture 2022 (GFFA 2022).

The Undersecretary for Agriculture and Marine Resources, Ibrahim Al-Hawaj, the Assistant Undersecretary for Agricultural Affairs, Dr. Abdulaziz Abdel-Karim, and the Director of Animal Control, Dr. Ibrahim Youssef, also participated in the GFFA 2022, which was actually held in Berlin, under the auspices of the German government, and with the participation of ministerial delegations from different countries, In addition to representatives of relevant international organizations and agricultural experts.

The forum, under the title “Sustainable Land Use: Food Security Begins with the Soil”, addressed several main topics, most notably the implementation of measures to maintain soil health, reclamation of land and limited land resources, access to agricultural land, and the adaptation of agricultural systems to climate. Change and reduce pollutants such as pesticides and excessive use of chemical fertilizers that affect the viability and fertility of agricultural soils and soils, in addition to maintaining the reclamation of agricultural soils in a way that preserves the biological diversity of living organisms coexisting in the soil.

The event also addressed the importance of managing water resources and their quality to ensure soil health from degradation, as well as policies that promote sustainable soil and land management and circulation to reduce desertification, land degradation and drought on food-improved agro-ecosystems. Minister Khalaf noted that the Global Forum aims to raise awareness and the level of public debate on reforming food systems, and how this can help countries achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by implementing new and quality reforms that will benefit the people and the world. In addition to setting principles to guide governments and other stakeholders seeking to leverage their food systems to support the Sustainable Development Goals, he added, these principles will set out an optimistic and encouraging vision in which food systems play a central role in building a more just and sustainable world.

He pointed out that the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning follows practices that contribute to the improvement and reclamation of agricultural soils through the applicable legislation such as the Law of Agricultural Fertilizers and Soil Conditioners, and the Law of Pesticides, in addition to network maintenance and development. Agricultural banks, adopting good agricultural methods. Such as protected farming systems and hydroponics that focus on practicing sustainable soil management.

He affirmed Bahrain’s commitment to reach zero neutrality by 2060, as announced by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, who emphasized that climate change is a global challenge that requires everyone to harness all capabilities and better exchange. practices to overcome them, by developing advanced solutions to reach those who aspire to climate security, adding that the Kingdom supports everything that would achieve climate goals that contribute to protecting the planet.

GFFA 2022 included several sub-sessions, including the meeting of senior officials concerned with agricultural affairs in various countries of the world and representatives of specialized international organizations.

The forum also issued a statement that included several recommendations related to land and its uses and ways to preserve it to ensure global food security.
