Labour Minister chairs LMRA board meeting

Manama, Jan. 23 (BNA) The Minister of Labor and Social Development and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Labor Market Regulatory Authority Jamil bin Muhammad Ali Humaidan chaired today the meeting of the Board of Directors of the Labor Market Regulatory Authority, held remotely.

The meeting reviewed the progress made in implementing the main projects of the Labor Market Regulatory Authority, and the ongoing efforts to facilitate transactions to save consumers time, expand the use of technology and conduct transactions electronically.

The minister stressed the importance of intensifying efforts to contribute to achieving the government’s aspirations, led by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to implement the economic recovery plan aimed at developing and creating the economy. Good job opportunities for citizens, making citizens the best choice for employment, in addition to developing the supervisory and regulatory procedures of the Labor Market Regulatory Authority.

Humaidan stressed that the biggest challenge is to keep pace with efforts to sustain growth and develop the labor market, in line with the basic principles of Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030 and the government’s action plan.

The minister was briefed on the progress of implementing a number of projects, foremost of which is the wage protection system and the level of employers’ commitment to join it according to the timetable set for the three phases. He stressed the importance of strict application of the wage protection system aimed at establishing stability in the work environment and reducing labor disputes.

He also reviewed the optional insurance system for domestic workers, which provides the necessary protection for both employers and domestic workers, with directions to study the possibility of adding new features to it to serve and preserve the rights of employers.

The session discussed progress in implementing the Wage Protection System, whose third phase entered into force on January 1, 2022. It covers companies with up to 49 workers, or about 98% of active companies in the country.

The CEO of the Labor Market Regulatory Authority, Jamal Abdulaziz Al-Alawi, briefed the Board of Directors on the performance of the authority, especially with regard to the recently launched projects, namely the wage protection system and the voluntary insurance system for domestic workers.

He stressed that the Labor Market Regulatory Authority is cooperating with its partners the Central Bank of Bahrain and the Bahrain Insurance Association to develop the voluntary insurance system for domestic workers to meet the needs of citizens and residents.
