Vingegaard has first Tour de France win all but secured

Paris, July 23 (BNA): Jonas Weinggaard passed the last serious Tour de France test to take his overall lead on Saturday and secure victory in the biggest cycling race.

After three weeks of grueling racing, the Jumbo-Visma captain dug deep into his reserves to deliver another impressive performance in a long trial in southern France, according to the Associated Press.

Weinggaard, who isn’t a pure specialist in racing against the clock, could have played it safe given his over three minutes lead at the start.

Instead, he took all the risks on the technical course and had a near-finish fear when he misjudged the curve and had to brake hard to avoid a collision.

Then Vingegaard slowed dramatically as he got close to the finish line. He finished stage 20 in second place, 19 seconds behind winner Wut van Aert, his main teammate.
