Verstappen pips Leclerc for top spot in F1 second practice

Manama, March 18 (BNA): Max Verstappen set the fastest lap this evening in the second Formula 1 training session of the Gulf Air Formula 1 race 2022 at Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir.


The Red Bull Racing driver’s mark of 1 minute 31.936 seconds was the fastest overall for the day.


The second practice is the only representative session of the qualifiers, as both are held in the evening under the bright floodlights of BIC.


Verstappen narrowly beat Charles Leclerc of Ferrari by 0.087sec. Leclerc’s best lap was 1:32.023.


Carlos Sainz was third fastest at the other Ferraris, 0.584 seconds off the lead by 1:32.520, while George Russell (1:32,529) was fourth for Mercedes and Fernando Alonso (1:32,877) was fifth for Alpine.


Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas made up for a lack of time in today’s opening practice by going into sixth place with a 1:32.951 lap difference, while Verstappen’s Sergio Perez came seventh with a time of 1:32.958.


Mick Schumacher was eighth for Haas with a time of 1:33.085, while Lewis Hamilton was ninth for Mercedes with a time of 1:33.144 and Kevin Magnussen finished both in two Haas cars in the top ten with a difference of 1:33.183.


The rest of the ranking from 11 to 20 are Lando Norris of McLaren, Esteban Ocon of Alpine, first-timer Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda of AlphaTauri, Guanyu Zhou of Alfa Romeo, Lance Stroll and Nico Hulkenberg of Aston Martins, Daniel Ricciardo of McLaren, and pair Williams, Nicholas Latifi and Alexander Albon.

The F1 field will be back on track on Saturday for third practice at 3pm.
