US eying Davis Cup quarterfinals after beating Kazakhstan

Glasgow, Sept. 15 (BUS): Tommy Paul and Taylor Fritz won their singles matches to give the United States an unforgettable 2-0 lead over Kazakhstan to top their Davis Cup group on Thursday.

The Americans are almost certain to reach the quarter-finals with two wins out of two in Group D, reports the Associated Press.

Paul enjoyed a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Mikhail Kukushkin before defeating Fritz Alexander Bublik 7-6 (6) 1-6 6-3 in Glasgow, Scotland. Rajiv Ram and Jack Sock were trying to make it an American acquittal against Bublik and Alexander Nedovsov later.

The Americans are now waiting to see if the Netherlands can follow suit with victory over the British team on Friday. Britain needs to win after losing to the United States on Wednesday. After that, the United States will play the Dutch national team on Saturday.

Australia came from behind to beat France 2-1 in the Group C match in Hamburg, Germany.

Richard Gasquet put the French on the right track with a 6-2 6-4 win over Jason Kubler, but Alex de Minaur tied the game 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 over Benjamin Bonnie and Matthew Ebden’s pair. Max Purcell completed the win by defeating Nicholas Mahut and Arthur Rindernik 6-4, 6-4.

The Australians top the table with two wins, ahead of Germany, who play Belgium on Friday. France lost to Germany on Wednesday.

Also Thursday, Serbia beat Korea 2-1 in Group B in Valencia, and Sweden tied Croatia 1-1 in Group A in Bologna, Italy.
