Cairo, Feb. 21 (BNA) On Monday, the United States and Egypt launched a joint working group to prepare for the United Nations summit on climate change to be held in Egypt in November, President Biden’s special envoy, John Kerry, said at a press conference in Cairo. John Kerry, President Biden’s special envoy on climate, said the group is focusing on the UN’s COP27 conference in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. He said that Egypt, which chairs the summit, has already begun its preparations and has set ambitious goals.
Shoukry said they discussed the priorities and objectives of the COP27 conference chaired by Egypt, including making funds available for developing countries to implement the 2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Change.
The US State Department said the former US senator and foreign minister, who arrived in Cairo on Sunday, is expected to deliver a speech at the American University in Cairo on the future of international climate action in the run-up to the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties.
At the press conference, Kerry said they aim to deliver on all promises made at last year’s United Nations climate summit in Glasgow, Scotland. At the 2021 summit, nearly 200 countries accepted a settlement agreement, which outside experts said showed progress, but it did not work.
This deal did not achieve any of the United Nations’ three goals: pledges that would nearly halve global carbon dioxide emissions, and $100 billion in annual climate aid from rich nations to poor nations, with half of that money going to help the developing world adapt to it.
