London, June 13 (BNA): Liverpool has reached an agreement with Benfica to sign Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez for an initial fee of 75 million euros ($79 million), the Portuguese club announced on Monday, in a deal that will bring about additional changes. Jurgen Klopp’s offensive options.
In a brief statement to the Portuguese stock exchange, Benfica said the transfer amount could rise to 100 million euros ($105 million) depending on the variables, according to the Associated Press.
Benfica said the 22-year-old has yet to agree to Liverpool’s terms, while the English club has yet to comment on the deal.
The arrival of Nunez, who scored 34 goals in 41 games for Benfica last season including two against Liverpool in the Champions League, could lead to further changes in Klopp’s front line.
Sadio Mane has been closely linked with a move to Bayern Munich, and that potential transfer could be accelerated once Liverpool sign a replacement.
Tall and technically gifted, Nunez will offer something new to the Liverpool attack, which has relied on the mobility of a younger attacking streak that includes Mohamed Salah, Mane, Roberto Firmino, Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz.
Jota and Diaz joined in the last two years. Salah and Firmino have one year left on their contracts.
Nunez played 11 games for Uruguay and followed in the footsteps of his compatriot Luis Suarez when playing for Liverpool. Suarez was at Anfield from 2011 to 2014.
Klopp spoke of his admiration for Nunez last season, after the striker scored in the first leg of Benfica’s Champions League quarter-final loss to Liverpool.
Klopp’s side beat Benfica 6-4 on aggregate en route to the final, losing to Real Madrid.
