Uruguay names Suárez and Cavani for last World Cup campaign

Montevideo, November 9 (BUS): Strikers Luis Suarez, Edinson Cavani and three other veteran players from Uruguay will participate in the World Cup finals for the fourth time in a row.

Head coach Diego Alonso on Thursday, led by veteran coach and young talents such as Federico Valverde, announced Uruguay’s squad for the tournament in Qatar.

Alonso, who replaced coach Oscar Tabarez during the final rounds of the South American qualifiers, has included Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo to his squad even though the player is still recovering from right thigh surgery.

Suarez and Cavani, 35, are both expected to play in their fourth and final World Cup finals. Three other veteran members of the team were also appointed – goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, defenders Diego Godin and Martin Caceres.

Uruguay is in Group H with Portugal, South Korea and Ghana. The team’s first match in Qatar will be against South Korea on November 24th.

The Five Veterans played under Tabarez and reached the World Cup semi-finals in 2010, the last 16 in Brazil four years later, and the quarter-finals in Russia in 2018.

Suarez is Uruguay’s top scorer with 68 goals in 134 matches, followed by Cavani who scored 58 goals in 133 matches.

Other players with World Cup experience include defenders Jose Maria Gimenez and Sebastian Coates, who will be participating in the tournament for the third time.
