Police said the attacker was shot dead by armed guards as he approached the gate in one of the first attacks since the Taliban took power last year.
“The guards of the Russian embassy (Taliban) identified the suicide bomber before he reached the target and shot him…There is no information about casualties yet,” Maulvi Saber, commander of the police district where the attack took place, told Reuters.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that an unidentified gunman detonated an explosive device near the entrance to the consular section of the embassy at approximately 10:50 am Kabul time.
“As a result of the attack, two employees of the diplomatic mission were killed, and there were casualties among Afghan citizens,” the ministry said.
Kabul police spokesman Khaled Zadran said the other four dead were Afghan civilians.
