Turkey’s Istanbul airport to remain closed due to heavy snow

Istanbul, January 25 (BNA) The suspension of flight operations at Istanbul’s Turkish airport was extended today, Tuesday, due to heavy snowfall, while the winter weather disrupted transportation throughout the city, which is home to about 16 million people.

“The suspension of flight operations has been extended until 1000 GMT on January 25 due to bad weather conditions,” Istanbul Airport said on its website.

Turkish authorities announced an administrative leave for all employees of public institutions on Tuesday to reduce mobility.

Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya said on Twitter that private vehicles will not be allowed on the roads until 1000 GMT while emergency teams continue to clean the roads.

Footage released by the governor showed trucks and cars stuck in the snow.

Turkish Airlines (THYAO.IS), Turkey’s national carrier, said on Monday it had canceled all flights from Istanbul Airport as the airport closed its operations.
