Tunis, Dec. 5 / BNA / Tunisia recorded its first case of the omicron variant on Sunday after health authorities in the North African country said that a man coming from Turkey had tested positive, according to the Associated Press.
A member of Tunisia’s COVID-19 task force, Dr. Hashemi Lozer, said the man is from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Loser said that his test results were positive on Friday at Tunis International Airport after arriving from Istanbul, and the subsequent examination of the sample at the Pasteur Institute of Public Health in the capital, Tunis, confirmed the Omicron variable.
He said several of his fellow travelers, including his brother, who tested negative for COVID-19, have been quarantined.
Health authorities have imposed travel restrictions on Tunisia after the omicron spread in Africa and Europe over the past week.
Health experts said that the general epidemiological situation in Tunisia has improved in the past two months after the country received shipments of vaccines from several countries, including the United States.
More than 25,000 people have died due to the Corona virus in Tunisia.
