Tsitisipas and Kanepi reach quarter finals

Melbourne Jan. 24 (BUS): Stefanos Tsitsipas and Kaia Kanepi qualified for the Australian Open quarter-finals in their last two matches on day eight of the tournament, the Associated Press reported.

Fourth seed Tsitsipas beat Taylor Fritz 4-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the men’s fourth round at Rod Laver Arena and 115th seed Kanbe beat second seed Aryna Sabalenka 5-7, 6 -2, 7-6 (7).

Tsitsipas recovered last year from two sets down to defeat Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals before losing to Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals. He went on to reach the final of the French Open.

Fritz was playing in the fourth round of a major tournament for the first time.

The women’s fourth round match was scheduled for the center court but had to be moved to the adjacent Margaret Court Arena due to today’s late session.

Kanebe dropped four match points as she served up for the match in the third set before eventually clinching them in the tiebreak.

The 36-year-old Estonian reached the quarter-finals at the Australian Open for the first time, and finally completed a Grand Slam set after twice reaching the quarter-finals at each of the three other Grand Slams.
