Three dead as Roslyn’s intense rains, winds hit Mexico’s Pacific coast

Mexico, October 25 (BNA) At least three people were killed in the devastation caused by torrential rains unleashed by Storm Roslin, which caused flooding along Mexico’s Pacific coast when it made landfall as a powerful hurricane on Sunday.

While Rosslyn hit Mexico as a Category 3 hurricane early Sunday morning along a relatively uninhabited stretch of Nayarit’s coast, it was largely spared from popular tourist beaches like Sayulita and Punta Mita before weakening later in the day as it moved Northeast of the country, Reuters reported.

Local civil protection officials confirmed the death of two women when their homes collapsed in the town of Rosamorada in Nayarit. State authorities added that a 74-year-old man died 25 miles (40 km) away in Santiago Acquintla when a beam fell on his head.

The torrential rains in Rosslyn caused torrential rains that flooded streets, while winds blew trees, rolled over vehicles and ripped off parts of buildings leaving debris strewn across the ground.

Laura Velasquez, head of Mexico’s Civil Protection Agency, said the military was helping to clean up areas where the storm had flooded roads and caused trees to fall, and that people in high-risk areas had been evacuated to temporary shelters.

“The evacuations have had a very important impact and people are very prepared to move,” she told a news conference.

National Electric Power Corporation (CFE) said Monday it has restored power to 71% of about 180,000 affected users across the states of Nayarit, Jalisco and Sinaloa, along Mexico’s hurricane-prone Pacific coast.

The storm also overtook the main beach resort of Puerto Vallarta in Jalisco, although it still generated strong winds and floods in the area.
