Thailand drops registration for visitors, outdoor mask rule

Bangkok, June 17 (BNA): Thailand has lifted a pre-registration requirement for foreign visitors that was seen as onerous and a burden on the recovery of the faltering tourism industry, according to the Associated Press.

The government’s COVID-19 Center also said Friday that the outdoor mask mandate will be rescinded from July 1 except for crowded places.

Thailand gradually began easing entry requirements late last year. But as of April, fully vaccinated travelers still had to undergo RT-PCR tests on arrival and stay in a government-approved hotel for one night for results to be known.

Registration for a “Thailand Card” requires online copies of vaccination documents, insurance documents and other documents, after which visitors will receive a QR code to use while traveling.

This requirement has already been abolished for Thais and will be dropped for foreign visitors on July 1.

The Center for COVID-19 Case Management has announced that arriving foreigners must still show evidence that they have been vaccinated or submit negative COVID-19 test results. But the requirement to keep an insurance policy has been dropped.

Many countries in Southeast Asia rely on tourism as an important source of revenue, and in the past few months have eased their entry requirements.

Thai health officials said on Friday that 1,977 new cases and 19 deaths linked to COVID-19 had been confirmed in the past 24 hours.

The country has seen more than 4.4 million cases and 30,422 deaths since the pandemic began.
