Swiss champion Young Boys fires coach David Wagner

Bern, Mr. 8 (U.S.): The win over Manchester United in the Champions League proved to be the culmination of David Wagner’s nine-month training at Young Boys of Switzerland that ended on Monday.

Wagner, the former US international, was sacked as the four-times champions Switzerland trailed by 15 points in second place behind leaders Zurich.

“We have lost faith that we will be able to turn things around,” said Christoph Speicher, Young Boys’ sporting director.

Wagner took over Huddersfield and Schalke 04, and after his appointment last June led the Young Boys quickly through three qualifying rounds to reach the Champions League group stage.

United States forward Jordan Pevok’s win sealed a 2-1 home win over Manchester United in September in injury time. This was the only win for the Young Boys, and his finish in last place meant he did not move to the second tier of European League.

Young Boys said assistant coach Matteo Vanetta has been promoted to take charge of the team temporarily for the remainder of the season.
