New York, March 23 (BNA): Minister of Sustainable Development, Noor bint Ali Al-Khalif, affirmed that the Kingdom is accelerating its efforts to achieve the goals of sustainable development within the framework of the comprehensive development process. She noted the Kingdom’s commitment to providing high-quality water, in accordance with international standards set by the World Health Organization, and adopted by the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council, noting that Bahrain’s efforts and endeavors aim to develop policies and programs necessary to protect and ensure the sustainability of water resources in order to achieve Goal 6 of the development goals. Sustainable, “Clean Water and Sanitation.”
The Minister made the remarks during his address to the United Nations Conference on the Mid-Term Comprehensive Review of Implementation of the Goals of the International Decade for Action, “Water for Sustainable Development,” 2018-2028, being held at the United Nations Headquarters here in March. 22-24. The event focuses on accelerating progress towards achieving water-related goals and targets.
In her speech, Al-Khulaif reviewed the main axes of the National Water Strategy 2030, which include strengthening coordination between the various water-related authorities, following up and monitoring the implementation of activities, programs and services, in addition to raising awareness and spreading it among citizens. Consumers, pointing out that the strategy aims to ensure effective management of water resources, and to provide sustainable water supplies of the required quality for various economic sectors to promote sustainable development.
She also praised the Kingdom’s selection by the United Nations and its affiliated Food and Agriculture Organization, to present its successful experience and the progress made in achieving the sixth goal of the sustainable development goals, “clean water and sanitation,” stressing that these achievements are the result of concerted national efforts. in providing renewable water resources.
She indicated that by 2021, the Kingdom was able to reduce the level of water stress to 156%, as it was able to reduce a fifth of the withdrawal of fresh water in 2000, while increasing efficiency at the same time. of water use by 80%, which confirms the country’s commitment to sustainable water management.
