Study: Pfizer/BioNTech booster raises Covid-19 protection for seniors

Berlin, Sep 16 (BUS): One study showed that booster vaccination of Covid-19 with Pfizer/BioNTech for people over 60 years of age significantly increases the protective effect.

Israeli researchers wrote in the New England Journal of Medicine that there were more than 10 times the number of confirmed infections and nearly 20 times the number of severe illnesses among people who received a third shot in Israel.

The Israeli researchers hypothesize that the more contagious delta type and the decline in protection six months after the second vaccine dose causes the rate of protection against infection to drop to 50 percent.

It is already known that antibody levels are about 10 times higher after a third dose than after just two doses, Karsten Watzel, general secretary of the German Society of Immunology, told dpa.

But the study now shows that this “translates into a very decent protective effect.”

However, Watzl noted that the possibility of side effects was not taken into account in the study. So far, there are no reports from Israel that the third strike leads to more pronounced side effects than the second.

Watzl also does not recommend the booster for younger people, but for all people over 80 and for people over 60 with pre-existing illnesses.

In Germany, a third vaccine is sometimes offered to people who need nursing, people over 80 and people who are immunocompromised.
