Storm pounds Japan with rain, leaving landslides in its wake

Tokyo, Sept. 24 (BNA): Tropical depression Talas dumped torrential rain Saturday in parts of Japan, causing landslides, stopping trains and killing a man after his car crashed into a puddle.

Police say a man who drove his car into a pond in central Japan’s Shizuoka Prefecture was rushed to hospital but died, the Associated Press reported.

In another part of Shizuoka, police said rescue efforts were underway after a road collapsed due to heavy rain. Japanese media reports said a man managed to crawl out of a truck that tripped and another was missing.

Separately, three people were injured in a landslide in Shizuoka, according to a prefectural police spokesperson.

Rivers swelled in the city of Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, where a video posted on social media showed cars wading through watery streets. News footage showed an underground walkway at a train station flooded with muddy water. Because trains were temporarily stopped, about 1,000 people were stranded in a plaza in Shizuoka where a concert was held Friday night.

The storm is the latest to hit Japan after typhoons have caused numerous deaths and damage in recent weeks.

Talas was heading toward Tokyo and hitting a wide area around the capital with torrential rain. Landslide warnings were issued along the storm’s path.
