Washington, Jan. 23 (US): After spending one weekend in second place, Spider-Man: No Way Home proves there is still some fighting left. Sony’s co-starring superhero returned to number one in its sixth weekend in theaters and became the sixth highest-grossing movie of all time worldwide.
The movie topped the North American charts with $14.1 million, according to studio estimates on Sunday. Globally, it has now generated nearly $1.7 billion in profits, surpassing the combined earnings of both “Jurassic World” and “The Lion King.” And in North America, its $721 million release makes it the fourth largest of all time.
Peter Parker also stole first place from ” Scream, which dropped about 59% — a typical drop for horror — in its second weekend with ticket sales estimated at $12.4 million. Paramount’s release has grossed $51.3 million so far.
Universal and Illumination’s single Sing 2 took third place in its fifth weekend, bringing in $5.7 million. An Associated Press report said the animated title has earned $241.2 million worldwide.
There was a bit of competition for the rest to deal with this weekend. The only two new shows nationwide in theaters were relatively lesser-known versions: “The King’s Daughter,” a fairy tale with Pierce Brosnan that was filmed in 2014 and has continued to date (bombed with $750,000 from over 2,000 locations), and “Payback Love” , a historical, faith-based romance with Nina Dobrev that topped the top five with $3.7 million.
