Manama, February 28 (BNA) The Special Envoy for Climate Affairs, Vice-President of the United Nations Environment Assembly and CEO of the Supreme Council for the Environment, Dr. Muhammad bin Mubarak bin Dina, participated in the event. The second part of the fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-5.2).
The meeting, which took place virtually at the United Nations Headquarters in Nairobi, with the theme “Strengthening Action for Nature to Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals,” began today, and will run until March 2.
In his speech before the session, Dr. Bin Dina emphasized that the Kingdom of Bahrain attaches great importance to the issue of environment and climate change, making it one of its priorities and one of the pillars of its modern development process.
These policies adopted by the Kingdom in the fields of environment and climate change are the outcome of the directives of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and the firm interest of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister. Dr. Bin Dina said that His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the personal representative of His Majesty the King and head of the authority, closely followed.
He pointed out that during the past years, the Supreme Council for the Environment worked diligently to develop laws and legislative rules related to the environment to make them more effective and comprehensive, in line with the sustainable development goals and Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030, taking into account the sustainable development goals. The Kingdom’s commitment to international treaties and conventions in the fields of environment and climate, noting that Bahrain is preparing to issue a new environmental law, which will mark the launch of a new phase of work in the field of environment and sustainable development.
The Special Envoy for Climate Affairs affirmed the Kingdom’s determination to confront the challenges of plastic waste and eliminate its risks, fulfill its commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and adopt basic natural solutions, such as expanding green spaces, to reach zero neutrality.
He also expressed the Kingdom’s pride in participating in the special session to be held by the United Nations Environment Assembly to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the United Nations Environment Program in 1972 (UNEP @ 50). UNEP@50 will be held online and in person in Nairobi, 3-4 March.
The United Nations Environment Assembly is the world’s highest decision-making body on the environment. It meets every two years to prioritize global environmental policies and develop international environmental law.
UNEA-5 will discuss a wide range of issues, including the dimensions of plastic pollution, nature conservation, the reliance on fundamental natural solutions to solve environmental problems and the management of chemicals and waste, as well as the role of promoting environmental governance and management.
