South Korea to issue new overarching defense strategy

Seoul, Feb. 21 (BNA): South Korea’s Defense Ministry announced Tuesday that South Korea is seeking to publish a new comprehensive national defense strategy next month to chart a medium- and long-term direction for the country’s security policy amid North Korea’s growing military threats. .

The document, which is similar to the United States National Defense Strategy, will replace the current National Defense Policy. It sets a policy direction for 15 years and will be published every five years, according to the ministry.

“The ministry aims to publish the national defense strategy in early March,” the ministry said in a press release.

“It is a comprehensive DoD document aimed at setting a clear strategic direction for the medium and long term.”

Since the document contains classified military information, it is unlikely that it will be open to the public.

The department, separately, outlined a set of general goals, which will be included in the Defense Strategy, in the Defense White Paper 2022 released last week.

The goals include “integrated and active” defense, an effort to deal with complex security challenges, such as North Korea’s advanced nuclear threats, intensifying Sino-American competition and climate change.

The other goal is “Alliance and Solidarity,” which reflects Seoul and Washington’s efforts to develop their partnership into a global comprehensive strategic alliance and strengthen their solidarity.
