Ski resorts cheer as spring storm dumps snow in California

SAN FRANCISCO, Apr. 18 (BUS): A spring storm has brought several feet of snow to the Sierra Nevada and rain over parts of the San Francisco Bay Area, with more stormy weather expected this week.

Seven days of snow totaled 3 feet (0.9 meters) in some mountainous areas through Saturday, the Central Sierra Snow Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley, reported.

“We get a little abundance in April!” Soda Springs research station said on Twitter.

Mammoth Mountain in the eastern Sierra reported about a foot (30 cm) of fresh snow. The AP reports that the resort said it will remain open for skiing and snowboarding through Memorial Day.

Lake Tahoe resorts have also reported significant snowfall. Drivers heading into the mountains have been urged to exercise caution due to the slippery conditions.

The National Weather Service said parts of northern California, including the Bay Area, could see pockets of rain most days of the week thanks to an unstable weather pattern halting over the area.

The welcome precipitation could help slow the onset of the fire season, but it won’t do anything to alleviate the state’s drought, Matt Mehley of the San Francisco Weather Service said.
