Manama, Dec. 1 (BNA) Health authorities ordered all members of Portuguese football club Tondela to undergo isolation on Wednesday in the latest setback related to a new increase in coronavirus cases in the country.
The isolation order came after 13 members of the Belenenses were found to have been infected with the new omicron variant of the coronavirus. Belenenses had only nine players available to play against Benfica this weekend in a match that was abandoned after the break.
Six players have tested positive for COVID-19 at Tondela, though the club has not said if they have the omicron variant, according to the Associated Press.
She said that all the players and the technical staff are in isolation and are awaiting further instructions from the health authorities.
There were also concerns about the players at Sporting Lisbon, who played against Tondela on Sunday.
Portuguese media said that Sporting defender Sebastian Coates has contracted the virus and that the team is awaiting the results of the tests carried out with the rest of the team members.
The Portuguese league, health authorities, both Benfica and Belenenses were trying to avoid blame for allowing Saturday’s match to take place despite concerns about the Corona virus and the Omicron substitute.
