Portugal again imposes Covid-19 restrictions on public life

Madrid, Dec. 22 (BNA): In view of the sharp rise in the number of coronavirus infections in Portugal, the government has introduced planned restrictions on public life that were due to come into effect from Dec. 31.

Today, Tuesday, Prime Minister Antonio Costa announced that work from home will be mandatory whenever possible, from December 25, and nightclubs and bars will have to close.

Costa said the steps were necessary because of the risk of the situation being exacerbated by the highly contagious Omicron variant.

The need to provide proof of testing will be extended to hotels and other public places.

School lessons will resume on January 10, after the usual return to school after the new year.

Despite the high vaccination rate of about 90 percent of the population, the seven-day infection rate for the coronavirus in Portugal has risen to more than 300.
