Peru stripped of U-17 World Cup hosting rights – FIFA

Zurich, April 4 (BNA): Peru became the second country in recent weeks to be stripped of the right to host the soccer World Cup, after the federation said Monday that the South American nation had failed to fulfill infrastructure obligations before the U-17. world Cup.

FIFA said the Under-17 Championship would still run from November 10 to December 10. 2, adding that its board would appoint a new host, Reuters reported.

“This step was taken due to the inability of the host country to fulfill its obligations to complete the necessary infrastructure to host the tournament,” FIFA said in a statement.

“Despite the very positive working relationship between FIFA and the Peruvian Football Federation (FPF), it has been determined that there is now insufficient time to secure the required investment and complete the necessary work with the Peruvian government before the tournament is due to start.

“FIFA would like to express its thanks to the federation for their efforts, and remains open to organizing a competition in Peru in the future.”

The FPF took note of FIFA’s statement, before providing further clarification of the decision.

“The decision is based on delays in starting sports infrastructure works… in addition to the recent weather events in Peru that caused damage and affected many families,” the association said in a statement.

Northern Peru was hit by torrential rains last month amid Typhoon Yaku, burying homes and cars in mud and killing at least six people.

The Peruvian federation added that it and FIFA were working on the “operational organization” of the event, while the Peruvian government focused on investing in infrastructure for public venues.

“Despite the willingness of the government authorities to fulfill the obligations undertaken as a country before FIFA, its Implementation Unit has not been successful in complying with the operations within the established deadlines,” said the FPF.

Last month, Indonesia was stripped of its rights to host the Under-20 World Cup, after some politicians in the Muslim-majority country were outraged over Israel’s participation.

The two tournaments were initially scheduled to take place in 2021, but were moved to 2023 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
