Pedersen wins 6th stage of Giro, Leknessund stays in lead after calmer day

Naples, May 11 (BNA): Mads Pedersen won stage six of the Giro d’Italia Thursday after a two-man breakaway with a line in sight. Andreas Leknesund retained the pink jersey.

Pedersen outpaced Jonathan Millan and Pascal Ackermann in a sprint at the end of the 162-kilometer (101-mile) scenic route that started and finished in Naples, according to the Associated Press.

It looked as though Alessandro De Marchi and Simon Clarke were going to battle for victory after their breakaway early in the day, but they got swallowed up less than 300m from the finish. De Marchi nodded and they hugged each other as he crossed the line.

There were two categorized climbs along the stage that went around Mount Vesuvius before passing through Sorrento and along the Amalfi Coast on a relatively calm day.

Pre-race favorite Remko Evenpoel was in a lot of pain after being involved in a couple of those crashes but seemed to be unfazed by that as he finished safely in the peloton on Thursday to stay 28 seconds behind Lekensund. Aurélien Paret-Peintre was third, 30 seconds behind Leknessund.
