Leipzig wins; Freiburg, Leverkusen drop points in Bundesliga

Berlin, Jan. 8 (BNA): Leipzig overcame a group of coronavirus infections to beat Mainz 10 men 4-1, while Freiburg and Bayer Leverkusen slipped on points after their lead in the German Bundesliga on Saturday.

Patrick Schick’s 17th goal this season was not enough for Leverkusen, who were fortunate in a 2-2 draw against Union Berlin as the visitors hit the post twice late.

Freiburg, who spent the league’s winter break in third place, drew relegation-threatened Armenia Bielefeld 2-2 despite scoring first through Janek Haberer and Jeong Woo-young.

American striker Ricardo Pepe made his debut as a second-half substitute in the 3-1 defeat to Hoffenheim. Stuttgart also tied last-place finisher Grether Fürth 0-0, according to the Associated Press.

Borussia Dortmund had hoped to reduce Bayern Munich’s lead to six points by beating Eintracht Frankfurt at the end of the match.

In Leverkusen, Schick rewarded the hosts’ dominance of Al Ittihad with the first goal in the 39th minute, hitting the ball from a narrow angle after Andreas Loth saved Moussa Diaby’s initial effort. This was Schick’s ninth in Leverkusen’s last five Bundesliga matches.
