Paraguay’s long-ruling Colorado Party has easy election win

ASUNCION, May 1 (BNA): Paraguayans voted overwhelmingly to keep the longtime ruling Colorado Party in power for another five years, backing its presidential candidate and giving him a majority in both houses of Congress, the Associated Press reports.

Santiago Peña, a 44-year-old economist, took 43% of the vote in a preliminary count from Sunday’s election, with nearly all polling places reported. That was well above the 27% held by his closest rival, Efraín Alegre, of the New Paraguay Pact, a broad-based opposition coalition united in an effort to end Colorado’s seven-decade stranglehold on power.
