Ombudsman Office, SIU organise workshop on independent investigation mechanisms

Manama, November 28 (BNA) The Board of Grievances and the Special Investigation Unit organized today an interactive workshop on “mechanisms of independent investigation”.

The week-long workshop, which was held at the Judicial and Legal Studies Institute (JLSI), in cooperation with the British Embassy in Bahrain and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), was attended by representatives of the Ombudsman’s Office, SIU, and the Internal Audit and Investigations Department of the Ministry of Interior.

The workshop was presented by experienced executive practitioners from the UK’s Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC), and included important discussions, specifically about the methodology the IOPC is following in its investigations, particularly in the area of ​​investigating the use of force and assessing evidence.

These topics addressed the identification of detailed procedures such as collecting evidence and hearing witnesses, the elements to be verified in cases of contact with police personnel, as well as standards of excellence, drawing conclusions, and organizational learning.

This advanced workshop is part of a series of workshops and training programs offered through the joint collaboration of the Ombudsman’s Office, the Special Investigations Unit, the British Embassy, ​​the United Nations Development Program and the IOPC, with the aim of exchanging experiences and identifying best practices for the work it does. Independent oversight bodies in supervising police behaviour, as well as continuing to develop participants’ skills and knowledge in their field of work based on real case studies, results of real investigations and results of assessments and reviews.
