Olympic members unite against Infantino’s World Cup plan

BEIJING, Feb. 3 (BNA) – The International Olympic Committee on Thursday described FIFA’s faded plan for a biennial World Cup as a threat from football to all other sports.

IOC President Thomas Bach reprimanded his counterpart Gianni Infantino, an IOC member for the past two years, for not being in Beijing to hear the criticism, according to the Associated Press.

“We would all have liked to discuss the FIFA proposal for the World Cup every two years with the FIFA President and a member of the International Olympic Committee,” Bach told about 100 colleagues at the traditional meeting prior to the Olympics. .

Bach, in a break from the usual decency of IOC gatherings, added that speaking to Infantino directly “is not possible, contrary to expectations, because he canceled his visit to Beijing the day before yesterday.”

Infantino was expected to be watching remotely from Cameroon after he told the IOC that he would be attending the final stages of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The FIFA president has been pushing a plan to hold the men’s and women’s World Cups every two years instead of four.

FIFA believes the plan will speed up the development of football around the world, close the gap in European clubs and national teams that dominate competitions, and add billions of dollars in revenue that it could share among 211 national associations.
