Olympic champion Zverev earns fifth season title in Vienna

Vienna, Oct. 31 (BNA) – German Alexander Zverev won his fifth title in the golden tennis year on Sunday, with a convincing 7-5, 6-4 victory over American seed Francis Tiafoe at the ATP Championship in Vienna.

The 24-year-old Zverev needed an hour and 36 minutes to add his final honor in the 2021 run highlighted by the Olympic gold medal in Tokyo, German news agency dpa reported.

But with only 25 losses and two defeats since Wimbledon, the Hamburg player is arguably in the shape of his life and with 18 wins in rounds, only great player Boris Becker has the most among German players.

Zverev and Tiafoe, who survived an epic semi-final to reach Sunday’s final, traded an early break but Zverev scored decisively in the 12th game of the opening set.

Tiafoe struggled to keep his form as he was tired and Zverev, aided by eight seconds of aces, took the win comfortably and will head to the Paris Masters next week in a confident mood.
