Northern part of damaged Beirut grain silos collapses

Beirut, August 23 (BNA) The northern part of the grain silos that was damaged two years ago by an explosion in Beirut port collapsed early this morning, Tuesday, after warnings that the structure was too tilted to survive.

LBCI television reported that the accident sent a cloud of brown and gray dust over the waterfront. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

The massive explosion in the port on August 4, 2020 killed more than 220 people and destroyed the northern part of the granaries, leaving wheat and corn dripping in the sun.

Recently, silos have been burning for weeks, which officials said was the result of the summer heat that ignited the rotting fermented grain.

Part of the structure collapsed on July 31 and another section fell on August 4, the second anniversary of the explosion.

On Sunday, the Ministry of Health said that dust samples from across the port showed that the air contained large amounts of common mold, which would not be dangerous unless it was inhaled in large quantities over a long period of time.
