Wellington July 25 (BNA): Sarina Bolden climbs over two defenders and heads towards goal. The Associated Press reported that New Zealand goalkeeper Victoria Eason fouled the ball and missed it as it crossed the goal line.
Bolden fist bumped as she darted to the sideline to celebrate with her teammates after scoring the first-ever Women’s World Cup goal for the Philippines, a goal that also made her team the first eight newcomers in the 2023 edition to claim victory. The score was 1-0, but that was all the Filipinos needed to beat Football Ferns.
The 27-year-old striker did not have a direct route to represent the Philippines. Born in Santa Clara, California, Bolden spent her early athletic years playing for the American Academy.
Bolden joined the Philippines national team in 2018 while playing for Loyola Marymount. She will go on to sign her first professional club contract in 2019 with Sandvikens IF in Sweden.
After leaving Sweden she has spent time playing for teams in Taiwan, the USA, Japan and now Australia with Western Sydney Wanderers.
