Collapsed building in Cameroon has killed 16 people

Yaoundé, July 24 (BNA): At least 16 people were killed and some 36 injured Sunday when a four-storey building collapsed on top of a smaller one in Cameroon’s largest city, authorities said.

The governor said that “rescue workers, with the help of Cameroonian government forces, are still digging through the wreckage to see if more bodies can be recovered.”

The Associated Press (AP) reports that the Army’s fire brigade has been ordered to join the country’s Red Cross and other rescue services in searching for survivors.

Locals say building collapses happen often in Douala, sometimes due to natural disasters such as landslides and other times due to poor construction.

Douala City Council is currently demolishing homes in high risk areas prone to flooding or landslides. The building that collapsed on Sunday has not been demolished.
