The initiative was held under the patronage of His Majesty the King’s Representative, Chairman of the Supreme Council for the Environment, His Highness Shaikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
The Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture cooperated with the Supreme Council for the Environment and the Royal Guard to plant seedlings as Bahrain aims to increase mangrove plantations.
Upon his arrival, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah was received by Minister of Municipalities and Agriculture Wael bin Nasser Al-Mubarak, Minister of Oil and Environment and Special Envoy for Climate Affairs Dr. Muhammad bin Mubarak bin Dinah, and Major General Muhammad bin Al-Bahrain Al-Musallam. Commander of Sakhir Air Base, Head of Royal Follow-up Affairs, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources Dr. Khaled Ahmed Hassan and other officials.
His Highness Sheikh Abdullah indicated that the project is in line with the development goals led by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, pointing out that the scheme refers to the second phase of the plan, which aims to plant 460,000 mangroves annually.
The initiative is also in line with the vision of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, and in implementation of the national afforestation campaign (Green Forever).
The ambitious plan aims to expand green spaces and achieve environmental balance as part of Bahrain’s ongoing efforts, to reduce carbon emissions by 50% by 2035, and to reach zero neutrality in 2060.
He pointed out that this ambitious program is one of the most important steps aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change, and provides a natural and incubating environment for fish, marine life and birds, especially migratory birds that are abundant in the Kingdom.
He praised the cooperation between the government and private sectors to protect biodiversity and plant mangroves, noting that planting these trees has a major role in protecting the marine and coastal environment.
His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad planted mangrove seedlings on the coast of Umm Al Naasan Island, which is considered a natural reserve for many birds, fish and marine crustaceans.
The mangrove cultivation project on the island aims to preserve marine life and ecological balance due to the great and effective benefits of these plants in mitigating climate change.
